Inter IKEA Systems B.V. owns the intellectual property rights in the IKEA Concept and is the worldwide IKEA franchisor. The company has the responsibility to ensure that the IKEA Concept stays attractive and competitive while enabling growth and a profitable business for IKEA franchisees.
Today, IKEA is present in 63 markets. All IKEA stores and other customer meeting points are operated by franchisees, with the exception of the IKEA Store in Delft, which is owned by Inter IKEA Systems B.V. There are 12 different groups of companies that own and operate IKEA customer meeting points under franchise agreements.
Inter IKEA Systems B.V. is part of Inter IKEA Group, which brings together three core businesses: Franchise (headquartered in the Netherlands), Range and Supply & Industry.
The Legal Affairs & Corporate Governance department at core business Franchise in Delft provides a full range of legal services to all companies and business units within its core business and to some other companies within the Inter IKEA Group. The team currently consists of 16 legal professionals of many different nationalities, backgrounds, cultures and legal expertise areas. It’s a truly positive and collaborative team that works together to mitigate risk, and provide quality legal advice while always striving to be even better business partners.
The legal team is expanding and is in an exciting transformational phase to embrace technology and smarter ways of working, It now seeks to recruit a Legal Counsel with focus on general commercial contracting, licensing and franchising.
Your primary role as Legal Counsel Franchise will be to support and work closely with the business unit IKEA Expansion in advising on matters relating to franchising of the IKEA retail system and expansion of the IKEA concept worldwide. Therefore, a big part of the role of the Legal Counsel will be to provide practical and business oriented legal advice on a wide variety of legal issues such as franchising, distribution, competition law, tax, IP, corporate governance etc, drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements with the IKEA-franchisees worldwide (e.g. franchise agreements and multichannel set-ups), leading pre- and post-contractual disclosure/franchisor registration projects and managing external law firms world-wide.
The role requires flexibility, openness to working partly outside of your specific legal focus area and the ability to work cross function within and outside the legal department, supporting colleagues when needed.

You are a qualified lawyer (LLM) with about 5-8 years proven working experience in general commercial contract matters preferably with a focus on franchise/licensing (gained at a premier law firm and/or a multinational) who thrives in a friendly, fast paced and transforming environment. Preferably you have a solid knowledge in privacy and experience with omnichannel (including online) retailing.
With your eye for detail and organized approach you keep every aspect under control. You are a true and collaborative team player who is at your best under pressure, knowing how to prioritize. You are flexible and have a hands-on, self-starting approach. Problems are proactively tackled by your problem-solving ability and ‘out of the box’ thinking. Sometimes innovative, creative solutions are needed to explore all possibilities. You have good business acumen and quick and sound judgment. You are service-oriented towards stakeholders while mitigating risks and protecting the company’s interests. You are committed to the IKEA vision and values and have an interest in home furnishings.
It goes without saying that you have an international mindset, are good at building relationships and have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
